Over the course of the next few months Bike Pure are delighted to be able to offer you an insight into the world of elite paracycling. Through a series of in-depth blogs we shall follow the progress of OzTandem, notably Australia’s world class tandem partnership of Mick Curran and Matt Formston. We’ll not only follow their racing but offer an insight as to what makes these athletes tick and how they fit in their everyday lives of family and careers into their pursuit of being world beaters and potential world and Paralympic champions as they focus toward the Rio Paralympics in 2016.

Mick Curran pilots Matt who is legally blind, rides the back of the tandem. Their story isn’t only about riding fast but it’s a partnership based on complete trust, integrity and above all a shared passion for sport and life in general.

Tandem riding, especially as a paracycling partnership, is a close and precise effort of combined cohesion, co-ordination and commitment across a multitude of levels. Both Mick and Matt are exemplary individuals, role models both on and off the bike. Having personally raced against them in road races, I’ve witnessed first hand the gift they possess and the drive and determination which is so evident. This is the main reason for undertaking Bike Pure’s close partnership with them in the hope that readers also get to be part of their incredible journey, both on and off the bike.

Over the course of their blogs we’ll be covering all manner of topics including anti-doping and how it forms part of paracycling, how they train and their partnership with Garmin Australia regards power data recording and analysis.

We are delighted to have them on board the Bike Pure family of athletes and we look forward to sharing their experiences. OzTandem are already making waves on the world stage, we invite you to become part of their journey…

Introducing OzTandem, aka – Matt Formston (Stoker) and Mick Curran (pilot).
Matt Formston (stoker, legally blind cyclist who rides on the back of a tandem) and Mick Curran (pilot, front rider) aka OzTandem, are the world class tandem cycle pairing hailing from Australia. They are the 2013 WORLD CUP  (Matane) GOLD medallist and are five time and current Australian National Champions across a staggering 3 disciplines;  the Tandem Road Race, Tandem Road Time Trial and the Tandem Pursuit on the track.

Matt:
Matt is one of the worlds leading stokers and compliments the OzTandem duo with a powerhouse engine that fires all day to deliver consistent power to the bike. Matt’s work ethic on and off the bike, both training and racing, is amazing. Matt does not train by halves. Matt is an important part of what makes this team so unique: he was diagnosed with macular dystrophy as a child and now retains only 5% of his vision, making him legally blind.  He has 0% central vision and blurred peripheral sight, of only 5%.

When off the bike, Matt juggles an Account Executive role with Optus Business/Singtel, and works with Mick in their coaching and consulting, keynote address and motivation speaking business, www.championvision.com.au

Matt has played multiple sports to a representative level, including Rugby Union and Ice Hockey. Matt was legally blind when achieving these results in able-bodied competition. He is happily married to Rebecca who he describes as his “driving force and rock” when maintaining a full time corporate job, running a small business and competing at the top of his sport.

Matt’s love for riding the bike came whilst riding from Sydney to Melbourne for charity in 2009. Since then, he has focused his efforts on mastering the art of riding on the back of a tandem. In 2011 Matt first represented Australia with his then pilot, Phil Thuaux, at the Para Cycling Road World Championships in Denmark. He has since started riding with Mick Curran as his current pilot since early 2012.

Mick:
Mick is the ‘pilot’ of the tandem and functions as the eyes for the team, calling out obstacles, responding to race moves and calling the shots.

Although a late starter (aged 24) to competitive cycling, Mick found himself rising quickly through the club and state grades. Mick holds an impressive single bike record of his own that included competing in the Australian National Road Series, winning the NSW Roadman of the year crown, spending a season living in Europe racing as part of a Dutch Cycling Team and numerous NSW State Titles, district titles and club championships along the way with wins at major races including: Blayney to Bathurst; Great Hunter Classic; NSW Elite State Criterium Championships; NSW State Team Pursuit Championships; NSW Roadman of the year; NSW State Kilo Championships.

When not on the front of the tandem, Mick Curran can either be found in front of the classroom inspiring and educating the next generation using his primary school education qualifications, or in front of clients delivering keynote addresses and motivational speeches with Matt as part of their speaking business – www.championvision.com.au

Mick grew up on the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia, surfing and playing every sport you could imagine. However, he was primarily a cricket in the summer and football (soccer) in the winter kind of guy until he was sidelined by a knee injury. His physio at the time advised him to ride a bike to aid recovery; the rest they say is history.

Together they make a formidable duo who display communication, team work and the ability to overcome obstacles and adversity to compete on the world stage. As a professional cycling team they have attracted some of the biggest names in sport including Shimano, Garmin, KASK and now Bike Pure.

In April OzTandem will travel to Mexico to compete at the 2014 UCI Para Cycling Track World Championships to kick off what is shaping up to be an important and busy year.
