Round 1 of the South African National Cross-Country Cup, one of which are held across the country, kicked off in Durbanville – Cape Town this past Saturday (February 9th).
Many of the well-known racing teams such as Team Jeep, Team BMC SA and many more, attended the event despite a heavy rainfall throughout the day. As a result of the weather conditions out on the course, a number of riders had to pull out during the event due to mechanical failures and injuries.
3 international riders such as Florian Vogel and Ralph Naef to name one of the two, also attended the event as part of their training for the upcoming ABSA Cape Epic.
Team Jeep’s Julian Jessop finished 2nd in the Youth Men, Thomas Jessop finished 6th place. Jessica Alcock finished 2nd in the Junior Women’s event in a time of 1:27.23.
Dylan Rebello of Team Jeep finished 4th in the Junior Men category.
Mariske Strauss of Team Contego dominated the Elite women’s event, Kendall Ryan of Team Jeep finished off the Top 10 positions.
Philip Buys dominated the Pro Elite Men’s category, Luke Roberts of Team BMC SA finished 4th (2nd in U23). Travis Walker of Team Jeep finished 8th (4th in U23).
As a first year riding U23, Patrick Belton finished 13th overall (6th in U23). Unfortunately Paul Rodenbach and Brendon Davids didn’t finish as a result of the conditions.
