Alberto Contador Handed ‘Two Year Ban’ for Doping

By: , , Filed in: News

Spanish professional Alberto Contador has been issued with a ‘two year sanction’. The long running saga finally came to a conclusion today when the Court of Arbitration for sport stripped him of his 2010 Tour de France victory. Contador is only the second rider to have had his Tour de France title nullified after that of Floyd Landis in 2006.

Contador tested positive for the banned substance Clenbuterol during the 2010 edition of cycling’s leading event. Contador blamed meat contamination for the positive result. After a long and tedious legal process that has taken a year and a half, CAS have finally ruled that the Spanish rider doped and that he has to fore fit all results obtained since his positive test on 21 July 2010.

More bizarrely, reports suggest that Contador can return to in August of this year, potentially in time to ride this years Tour of Spain. The precise dates of Contador’s ban are yet to be confirmed.

This is hollow victory for anti-doping campaigners, with Contador having raced mainly unaffected since he produced the positive test in July 2010. With several months away from racing it shall merely be a short break from racing for the Spaniard.

Now Ullrich gets two year ban, nearly six years after Puerto broke, and 5 years after he retired. That'll show him. Are these people being funny?

A farce from a to z. How can you banned from racing when you're racing? Banned 'retroactively'? They couldn't prove he did; they couldn't prove he didn't, so let's give him a two year ban that lasts seven months. (?) What exactly was the point of all this? But look on the bright side; at least we have some more Lance v the Feds action to look forward to!
