Porte Pretty in Pink

By: , , Filed in: News

Young Australian Richie Porte (Saxo Bank) made history this afternoon by taking his first leaders jersey in a grand tour. He also made history by being the first Bike Pure rider to pull on the leaders jersey at a major tour.

The 25 year old Tasmanian took the jersey from Alexandre Vinokourov in an eventful day at the Giro, which saw a break of major contenders gain a lead of around 15mins on the main pack. This was the longest stage of the Giro and the wet conditions didn’t prevent them from working well to stay ahead and cross the line with a lead of almost 12 minutes over the chasing bunch.

It’s been an amazing week for Australian cycling with stage wins on both sides of the Atlantic at both the Giro and Tour of California.

Richie Porte is a young role model with a bright future ahead of himself and the fact that he aligns with our philosophy of saying ‘no to doping’, the public have faith in this great future champion.

On behalf of all us here at Bike Pure and our many members around the world – we congratulate you Richie on a great performance.

Porte now leads his nearest rival by 1min42secs and could well keep the jersey for a few more days yet.

From Richie himself: "I came through the Italian amatuer system and I hope my story of racing on nothing harder than coffee, centrum and porridge could be something to show that if you have the talent you can make it without doping"
